Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is truly a holistic therapy that has its roots in the most ancient healing practices of humanity. From the Ayurvedic perspective, it is used to protect one’s life force (prana), improve respiration, blood circulation, regulate digestion, metabolic activities, deflect disease and promote a sense of peace and well being on the mental, physical and spiritual plane.

Essential oils are crystalline structures that carry light. They travel through the space between our cells, where molecules of emotion also travel. In this way, they are able to work on deep levels to bring healing and therapeutic benefits. They have a beautiful way of mingling with the aura emanating from a person. It is no wonder fragrance has been used since time immemorial to lift people to finer, higher vibrations, connecting them with wider consciousness.

Best essential oils for each dosha.

Vata - the light, dry, mobile and cold qualities of Vata are balanced by using heavy, calming, nourishing and warming oils like clary sage, frankincense, myrrh, lavender, chamomile, marjoram, jasmine and rose.

Pitta - the hot, sharp and intense nature of Pitta is balanced by using cooling, soothing and calming oils like chamomile, clary sage, geranium, jasmine, lavender, vetiver, neroli, peppermint, rose, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang.

Favor these oils in the summer/early fall or when you feel “heat in the body and mind, angry, irritable or you just want to feel nourished and soothed.

Kapha - The cool, heavy and slow nature of Kapha is balanced by using stimulating, warming and cleansing aromatics like basil, bergamot, cedarwood, eucalyptus, frankincense, grapefruit, juniper, lemongrass, lavender, rosemary, sweet orange, and fir.

Use these oils in late fall, winter and spring or if you feel slow and sluggish and want to feel invigorated, stimulated and uplifted.

Simple ways in which incorporate aromatherapy:

Massage -  as part of your daily routine. Mixing 15-30 drops into 1 oz of carrier oil of your choice. Carrier oils dilute the essential oil so that they can be applied to your skin. Never use them on your body without diluting them first as they can irritate your skin. Daily self massage is one of the best ways to use these essential oils and start your day feeling fresh, smelling beautiful and giving self love.

Inhalation - can be applied to your palms and directly inhaled from the bottle or placed in a pot with boiling water,  covering your head with a towel and inhaling deeply. Another method is placing a few drops on a dry handkerchief and breathing deeply as you feel the need to. That’s a wonderful way to bring aroma with you anywhere you go. Place the handkerchief in a ziplock bag and throw it in your purse.

Diffuser - use a diffuser to send aroma across a room. Use specially made electric powered diffusers.Place 5-10 drops of essential oil into your diffuser and within moments you will have beautiful aroma in the whole room. This can be used in your home and office.

Personal fragrance - mix essential oil or oils of your choice with carrier oil or an unscented body mist at a ratio of 5 drops of oil per tablespoon of product. Create a truly original scent for yourself to spray on or apply to your skin daily.

Bath - place 8 -10 drops of your favorite oils in combination or just a single oil into 2oz milk or honey for a nourishing aromatic bath. I encourage you to play with various oils and make blends that you love and want to wear on your body or smell in your environment. It’s such a simple way to bring peace and calm to your environment.
